What is Deep Cleaning?
Deep cleaning, also called scaling and root planing, is used when deep pockets are found in the teeth. During this process, a dentist will eliminate tartar and plaque from both the tooth’s surface and the pocket of the tooth. This is done with either a electriceor ultrasonic instrument or manual scaling tool.
Root planing is the part two in the deep cleaning process, and removes plaque and tarter from the tooth’s root surface. This process is generally completed in two separate appointments.

When Do I Deep Cleaning?
The average, healthy tooth will generally contain what is called a “pocket”. A pocket in a tooth should be no more than 3mm in depth and the depth will be determined by a dentist with a tool, known as a probe. Deep cleaning is used in situations where a dental evaluation shows deeper pocketing and the pocket needs to be minimized.
Deep cleaning is important when a patient has a larger pocket and needs to have it reduced in size in order to maintain or repair the health of the root, tooth, and gums. A dentist will be able to determine whether or not a deep cleaning is needed.
